Uncertainty over health of Jonathan’s CSO

Emerging reports say that the health condition of Mr. Gordon Obuah, former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to President Goodluck Jonathan may taken a turn for the worse in the custody of Department of State Services (DSS).

There was uncertainty over his state of health last night as his condition was said to have deteriorated

Obuah has been reportedly detained in solitary confinement since last Thursday when he honoured an invitation to the agency in its Abuja Headquarters for undisclosed reasons.

On July 18, 2015, Onochie Onwuegbuna, his lawyer issued a press statement on behalf of Obua’s family complaining about the conditions in which his client was being detained and said that his client was being witch-hunted by the Buhari government.

He said his client, who is an employee of the DSS was diabetic and hypertensive and was being denied his drugs as well as food and water by the DSS.

Onwuegbuna said that the Buhari government had ‘marked’ his client, and other individuals who held offices in Jonathan’s administration and the arrest of his client was a scheme, “in order to implicate them by all means for phantom crimes or offences”.

A non-governmental organisation, the Society for Global Justice had also issued a statement on Obua’s continued detention at the DSS, on Saturday calling for the release of the former Chief Security Officer.

Executive director of the group, said “‎Obua has been detained since last Thursday at the headquarters of the State Security Services in Abuja without charge.

“He was also not told the reason for which he is being detained”, the group said.

The former CSO was allegedly taken into custody following investigations into how security vote at the Presidential Villa under his watch was spent.

It was gathered that Obua as CSO commanded a huge amount of money as security vote, which could not be accounted for.

The DSS has yet to publicly admit that the security operative is in detention or declare the reason for his arrest, fueling speculation that Obua was detained as part of a plot to embarrass the Jonathan administration.

The DSS could not be reached for comment, as it has yet to announce a new spokesperson.
