Undergraduate crushes mate to death on campus in Cross River

A sad tale befell a 400-level student of the Cross River State University of Technology who was crushed to death on campus by a fellow undergraduate on Tuesday.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim, Joseph Agbor, from the Department of Civil Engineering, was sitting by the drainage awaiting lectures when a car driven by a 200-level undergraduate rammed into him.

A source who pleaded anonymity said:

“Immediately the incident happened, the student driving the car rushed out and took the victim to the health centre on the campus where he was pronounced dead.”

The Public Relations Officer, CRSUT, Mr Onen Ebri Onen who confirmed the incident said:

“The killer driver told his friend, who is the owner of the car, that he should give him the car key while he was receiving lectures so as to take his property from the car. Since he couldn’t leave the classroom, the car owner decided to hand over the key to his friend. When the killer driver went to pick the items, he decided to drive the car though he could not drive well.

“I don’t know how the accident happened, because I wasn’t there. I was only informed when the crushed student was taken to the hospital.

“I got the story from my interaction with the owner of the vehicle. The victim is now in the mortuary. The car has been impounded by the school security outfit and the driver and the owner of the vehicle are with the police.

“The accident is not about speed limit. The owner parked his car somewhere and was attending a class and his friend came to him and said he wanted to retrieve his property from the car. For him not to abandon the class, he decided to give him the car key to go and remove his property and then give him back the car key, but along the line, when he got to the car, he decided to drive it and we hear that he could not drive. That was what the owner of the vehicle told me.”

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, who spoke with journalists said that the killer driver had been taken into custody.

“He is with us. Why was he driving recklessly on the campus? We are investigating whether he was drunk at the time the incident happened and we want to find out other causes of the accident,” she said.
