Utomi bemoans lack of trust in politicians

Director of Centre for Values in Leadership, Prof Pat Utomi has expressed disappointment in the country’s leadership and the lack of trust in political office holders.

Utomi, stated this at the Ripples Nigeria Dialogue themed “Rebuilding Trust in a Divided Nigeria”, held Thursday in Lagos, adding, that the country, in spite of its amalgamation some 100 years ago, is still missing the link of trust.

Utomi, who was represented by Mr Rasheed Adegbenro, senior Vice President, Centre for Values in Leadership, maintained that the country, beyond passions to lead, needs people with knowledge to drive the resources of the state.

The event was organised by the Ripples Centre for Data and Investigative Journalism (RCDIJ) in collaboration with Ripples Nigeria, an online award winning multi-media news platform.

Mr Adegbenro said, “Nigeria is in a state of bad disunite and lack of trust of leadership and this has been the bane of our government.

“Since the amalgamation of the country in 1914, over 100 years ago, we are still missing the link of trust.
“Nigeria needs people with knowledge as its leaders, not just leaders with zeal to lead. This is because beyond the urge to represent the people, we need knowledge to manage the resources in the country for development.”

Utomi while calling for stronger institutions in governance, condemned the electorates in their attitude of voting same set of leaders to power.

He added that many of the voters fail to evaluate the candidates before reelecting them back to office.

Speaking on youth unemployment, Utomi urged young graduates to take up voluntary jobs in order to gain necessary experience.
