Djokovic, Murray to miss Miami Open due to injury

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has pulled out of next week’s Miami Open because of an elbow injury.

The World number two, who is also the Defending champion of the tournament, apologised to fans who had bought tickets to see him play in Miami.

“My doctor has strongly advised against play because my elbow injury, that I keep carrying on for months, got worse in the past week,” he said.

“I will do everything in my power to recover and do all the necessary therapy to be able to return on court as soon as possible.”

Djokovic lost to Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in straight sets in the last 16 of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells last week.

World number one Andy Murray, who also crashed out of Indian Wells at an earlier stage, had also announced he was pulling out of Miami because of an injury to his right elbow.

Murray lost to Canadian world number 129 Vasek Pospisil in the second round last week; and the 29-year old, who won in Florida in 2009 and 2013, said:

“The focus is on getting ready for the clay-court season. Apologies to the fans, it’s one of my favourite tournaments.”

The Briton will be replaced in the draw by world number 136 Taylor Fritz.

But most importantly, Murray will extend his lead at the top of the world rankings as Djokovic will lose the points he earned from winning in Miami last year.
