‎Dozens go on trial over Burundi failed coup

At least 28 people will be tried in Burundi after being accused of taking part in an attempt to overthrow President Pierre Nkurunziza in May.

Those standing trial at the supreme court in the central town of Gitega have also been accused of inciting killings and destroying property during the anti third-term protests.

The trial comes after concerns were being expressed over the rising security situation in the country and those standing trial include Burundi’s former defence minister Cyrille Ndayirukiye and 27 other senior military and police officials.

Protests escalated in Burundi last April when the president announced he would seek a third term in office.
