2019: Abdulsalami says Buhari, Atiku, others will sign MoU on campaigns, hate speeches

To guide against violence and hate speeches during the 2019 electioneering campaigns, all presidential candidates are going to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

A former Head of State and chairman, National Peace Committee, Abdulsalami Abubakar, disclosed this on Wednesday after a meeting with a delegation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by its chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.

According to Abdulsalami, all the chairmen of every registered political party would also do the same.

The former Head of State explained that the meeting was aimed at receiving briefing from the electoral umpire on its preparedness in the conduct of the 2019 polls.

“The Chairman of INEC has briefed us on the preparation for the elections, his challenges and what he is going to do to make sure that there is successful free and fair elections,” he said.

Abdulsalami, who expressed worry over the security situation in the country, majorly in the North-East, however said, “We will do our best to help sanitise the political arena.”

He added, “You, members of the press, have a duty to educate our people and politicians so that when they go on campaigning, they campaign on issues and that there should be politics without bitterness.”
