Again National Assembly transmits controversial electoral bill to Buhari

The National Assembly joint committee on Election Matters, on Monday adopted N143 billion as budget for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fund the 2019 general elections.

The committee had resumed its meeting on the vexed issue on Monday after previous adjournments.

The lawmakers had adjourned indefinitely after the recent summoning of the INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu on two occasions to explain the budget.

President Muhammadu Buhari had submitted a total sum of N189 billion for consideration by the legislature as INEC budget to conduct the 2019 general election.

The joint committee however reconvened today (Monday) and entered into a closed-door session to begin consideration of a harmonised version of the 2019 election budget.

The co-chairman of the joint committee, Suleiman Nazif, said the opening prayer before the committee went into a closed-door session.

Many political watchers are now watching to see if the full House of both chambers will be reconvened to consider the report, as the Senate leadership has been accused of stalling plenary on fears of avoiding their removal.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has insisted that the Senate President Bukola Saraki has to vacate the seat since he has defected to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
