21-yr-old arrested for slitting friends throat over phone

A 21-year-old man, Ogadima Nkwaha, is now cooling his heels in police net after he slit the throat of his friend, John Effiong in the Olodi Apapa area of Lagos State.

He killed his pal when he lost a mobile phone he wagered with the victim during a gambling affair.

Reports say the deceased (John) had won over N60,000 from Ogadima and in a bid to recoup money lost, the suspect wagered his mobile phone which he reportedly lost again to John.

Ogadima who felt he had lost all requested that John give him back his phone but the victim refused and an argument which later snowballed into a brawl ensued between the pair with Ogadima reportedly slitting the throat of John with a broken bottle during the fight.

According to an eyewitness and a resident of Kumuyi Street where the incident happened, Effiong was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital where he was reported dead due to loss of blood.

“The two guys were childhood friends and they rarely fight. But their undoing was their love for gambling.” The resident who pleaded anonymity said.

Continuing, the resident said; “They had gambled that day with money and Effiong lost more than N60, 000 to Nkwaha. He thought he could still have a chance, so he decided to bet with his handset. However, his friend won again.

“He refused to release the phone to him and that was how they started arguing. Nkwaha said he must release the phone since he lost the bet, but Effiong refused.

“Nkwaha went inside the room and broke a bottle. Effiong pushed him and he stabbed him in the throat with the broken bottle.”

SP Dolapo Badmos, the Police Public Relations Officer, informed that Effiong’s body had been deposited in a mortuary and the suspect is now telling the police all he knows about the incident.

“We have a case involving one Ogadima Nkwaha, who allegedly stabbed one Effiong on the neck with a broken bottle during a fight between them.

“The victim’s corpse has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, while the suspect is in custody.”
