30 hostages freed in Burkina Faso hotel attack

Incoming reports confirms that about 30 hostages held captive by Al-Qaeda militants have been freed after gunmen attacked a hotel in Ouagadougou the capital of Burkina Faso.‎

Communications Minister of the West African country Remis Dandjinou said the security forces operation at the Splendid Hotel premises where the attacks took place was continuing.

“French special forces and Burkinabe troops were involved in rescuing the hostages from the hotel, which is used by UN staff and Westerners‎.” Dandjinou said.

Unfortunately, the attacks by Islamist militants which apparently involved car bombs have left 20 people dead and 15 others injured.

Eyewitnesses reported heavy gunfire from the top floors of the hotel mainly patronised by Westerners at around 05:00 local time (same as GMT).
