Communications Minister Pantami warns NCC over SIM card registration

Ali Isa Pantami, the minister of communications and digital economy, says 51 million Nigerians as of Wednesday have registered for their national identification numbers (NIN).

Pantami announced the figure at a weekly statehouse press briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

Pantami said it was a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment for any Nigerian to make transactions without NIN

He said failure to register for the NIN exercise could lead to 14 years imprisonment as stipulated by the Constitution.

He believes that NIN will give accurate number of Nigerians because of its uniqueness compared to population census which can be manipulated.

He added that 189 million Nigerians have registered SIM cards and that 150 million Nigerians have completed their registration while the remainder have problems of improper registration which has posed a challenge to the government.
