How 53 burned to death in Edo multiple auto crash

A multiple accident along Benin-Agbor-Onitsha Express road, on Thursday evening claimed 53 lives, with about five others sustaining various degrees of injury.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Edo State which confirmed the incidence, stated that eight vehicles and one motorcycle were involved in the accident.

The corps listed the vehicles to include two commercial Toyota Hummer buses, one Dyna truck, one tanker carrying petrol, one Ford bus and one Toyota Corrolla, adding that everyone in the commercial vehicles, a Sienna and Collora were burnt beyond recognition.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said security, as well as officials of the FRSC watched helplessly as the victims burnt as there was no fire service station at Abudu town, headquarters of Orhiomwon Local Government Area where the accident occurred.

A statement released by the FRSC, Edo State Sector Command on said five other persons who sustained injuries were taken to the hospital for treatment. The statement said everyone in the two hummer buses, Toyota Sienna, and Corolla car burnt to ashes.

According to the statement, the unfortunate accident was caused by break failure on the fuel-laden tanker, which led to an explosion.

The statement also said health workers from the local government had been invited to take charge of the mass burial of the victims.
