Adekuoroye wins bronze, qualifies for Rio 2016 Olympics

It was joy and excitement on Thursday as Nigeria’s female wrestler, Odunayo Adekuoroye, won bronze medal at the ongoing World Junior Wrestling Championship in Las Vegas, USA, and qualified for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Adekuoroye, who won a gold medal at the last Commonwealth Games braced all odds as she overcame top wrestlers to win bronze at the championship.

The 21- year old began her quest for honour with the defeat of Malysheva from Russia 4-3; she also beat Horsham of Ukraine 13-3, and lost 2-4 to Mattsson (Sweden) via a fall. She bounced back to demolish Shustoke of Belarus10-0, and also defeated Zhong X from China on Wednesday by a pin fall to claim a bronze medal and also qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel lgali, commended the Ondo State – born wrestler for her heroic feat adding that hard work and discipline played major roles in this achievement.

The Olympic gold medalist expressed optimism that Nigerian wrestlers will do the country proud at the Rio Games.
