After a long day of high drama, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Isiaka Oyetola, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the Osun State governorship election.

Joseph Afuwape, INEC’s Returning Officer, made the declaration on Thursday night after the results of the rerun were declared at the secretariat of the commission in Osogbo, capital of the state.

Going into the rerun, Ademola Adeleke, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had a slight lead of 353 votes, having polled 254,699 votes compared to Oyetola’s 254,345 votes in the initial election held on Saturday, September 22.

However, in the rerun, Adeleke polled 325 votes to Oyetola’s 1160.

Consequently, Oyetola polled a total of 255,505 votes overall to defeat Adeleke, who recorded a cumulative 255,023 votes.

The rerun was marked by allegations of intimidation from security personnel and political thugs, with the PDP rejecting the process even before its conclusion.

The PDP had also maintained, going into the rerun, that it had already won the election based on the first round of voting and should have originally been declared the winner by INEC.

A contentious legal battle is expected to follow this outcome.
