AGF backs arrest of judges

Coming after the endorsement of the Presidency, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, has justified the arrest and detention of some judges by operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS.

The AGF, who have gave his backing for the action of the DSS on Tuesday, added that no one is or should be above the law.

It would be recalled that the DSS had Friday night through the early hours of Saturday, raided the homes of judges in different parts of the country, arresting and detaining seven in the process.

Malami, who stayed away from a valedictory session organised by the Supreme Court for one of its retiring Justices, finally spoke his mind at the inauguration of an Expert Review Committee on implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

Responding to a question, the AGF said: “Was there an allegation of crime? Was there relevant provision of criminal procedure responsible for investigation?

“Is there an allegation of corruption? If there is, no body, no matter how highly placed will be spared.

“The right to investigate has not been taken away from the constitution. The allegation boarders on criminality and no one is or should be above the law.”
