Alex Ferguson congratulates Wayne Rooney after making history

Erstwhile Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson has congratulated Wayne Rooney after scoring the equalizer at Stoke City on Saturday to overtake Bobby Charlton as United’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The 31-year old, who reached 250 goals converted from a free-kick minutes after coming off the bench, have apparently confirmed his status as one of the greatest players to have served in the club.

Ferguson was delighted to see his former player reach the milestone, and said this emphatically: ‘Well done Wayne’.

“I would like to say huge congratulations to Wayne on reaching this milestone.

“It is no mean feat to score so many goals and he breaks a record that has stood for over 40 years.

“Wayne thoroughly deserves his place in the history books of this great club and I am sure that he will go on to score many more goals.

“Well done Wayne, I am absolutely delighted for you, you have been a great servant to this club and long may it continue,” he said.

Rooney also told reporters after the match that the honour meant a lot to him and hopes there is more to come.

“It means a hell of a lot. It is a great honour and I am very proud. It is difficult at the minute to be over-pleased because of the result but in the grand scheme it is huge honour. It is not something I expected when I joined. As I said before, I am proud and I hope there is more to come.

“The players who have played for this club have been world class. I am proud to play for this club. To be all-time goalscorer is a huge honour,” the 31-year old said.

Here’s a short list of United’s all-time top goal scorers:

250 – Wayne Rooney
249 – Sir Bobby Charlton
237 – Denis Law
211 – Jack Rowley
179 – Dennis Viollet, George Best
