Arrested Zambia minister charged, faces 5-yr prison sentence

The arrest of Zambia’s infrastructure and housing minister Ronald Chitotela has been confirmed by local authorities.

Reports say Chitotela has been charged with concealing property believed to have been bought with the proceeds of crime.

His arrest was however welcomed by Transparency International Zambia.

“We wish to use this occasion to encourage the ACC and all other law enforcement agencies to do their work without any fear or favour,” the anti-corruption campaign group said in a statement.

According to Dorothy Mwanza, the Assistant Public Relations Manager of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Chitotela had been charged on two counts of concealing property acquired in an upscale residential area in the capital.

Giving further details, she said Chitotelab bought the property with the proceeds of crime and registered in the name of another person.

If convicted, the embattled infrastructure and housing minister faces a penalty of up to 5 years in prison.
