Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele could be out for the rest of the year with a hamstring injury, the club said in a statement on Sunday.

The 20-year old, who joined from Borussia Dortmund this summer in a deal which could be worth £135.5m, hobbled off during his side’s win over Getafe on Saturday.

A statement on the club’s website said the France international had ruptured “his tendon in the femoral bicep in his left thigh.”

“He is expected to be out for between three and a half months and four months,” said the statement.

Dembele was making his first league start for Barcelona in the game against Getafe and his third in all competitions.

He came on as a substitute against Espanyol, started in their Champions League victory over Juventus, before lasting only 29 minutes against Getafe.

Dembele will also miss France’s final two World Cup qualifiers away to Bulgaria and at home to Belarus in October.
