CHAN Eagles win NPFL invitational tournament

Home-based Super Eagles defeated MFM FC 3-2 in the final of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) invitational tournament to emerge winners on Sunday.

The Eagles, led by head coach Salisu Yusuf, participated in the six-team pre-season competition as part of preparations for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.

In the final played at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, Anthony Okpotu’s brace and Kingsley Eduwo’s effort were enough to beat MFM who finished second in the league last season.

Last season’s top scorer, Okpotu opened the scoring at the very end of the first half and doubled their lead in the 69th minute, before Eduwo added the third on 77 minutes.

Jonathan Zikiye pulled on back for MFM only four minutes to stoppage time, which was followed by another goal by Uwaga Chuka on the stroke of full time, but the efforts were not enough to send the game into extra time.

Plateau United had earlier beaten Akwa United to win third position while Enyimba defeated Kano Pillars 3-2 on penalties in the fifth and sixth playoff.

The home-based Eagles will begin camping in Abuja next week as they intensify preparations ahead of CHAN.

Nigeria will face Rwanda, Lybia and Equatorial Guinea in the group stages of the 16-team competition which begins January 13 and ends February 4, 2018.
