Court grants Audu Maikori bail on health grounds

A magistrate court sitting in Kaduna State has granted Chocolate City boss Audu Maikori bail on health grounds.

Maikori who is on trial over comments he made on the Southern Kaduna crisis was granted bail following an application by his defence counsels on grounds of ill health.

Reports say prosecution did not object to the application as Maikori’s lawyers are now perfecting moves to meet his bail conditions even as the case has been adjourned to April 20, 2017 for further hearing.

Maikori was re-arrested by security operatives over his Southern Kaduna comments 22-days after he was initially arrested and whisked away by policemen who later transferred him to Abuja at the time for more questioning over what was regarded as inciting remarks.

The entertainment mogul who is in the custody of the Kaduna State Police Command reportedly collapsed and was rushed to Police Medical Centre on Sunday night.

The lawyer who was locked up in a cell before he collapsed was diagnosed with respiratory infection by doctors but later turned the corner before standing trial today in Kaduna.

His arrest and detention is being criticised by Kaduna State senator, Shehu Sani, who demanded the immediate release of Maikori, describing his latest arrest and incarceration as an affront to constitutional democracy.

“The case of Audu is becoming a stain and embarrassment to our country as a constitutional democracy,” Mr. Sani said in a statement.
