Customs officers in trouble over 30 containers of Tramadol

Published

on

Some officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have been arrested in connection with 30 containers of banned Tramadol illegally released from the Lagos and Tincan Island ports. But some of the containers were intercepted after leaving the two ports to their various destinations. Already, those who were arrested by the Service have been taken to the Abuja Head office of NCS for interrogation.

It was gathered that trouble started when an officer from the Federal Operation Unit (FOU), Zone A was allegedly arrested in connection with the deal. However, a source said that the officer was forced to mention names of other colleagues involved, having realised the gravity of punishment he would face.

The source also alleged that the embattled officials had collected millions of naira before releasing the containers to the importers, who smuggled the banned product to the country. Contacted, the spokesman of NCS, Tincan Island command, Uche Ejesieme, said that he was on capacity building training.

He added that he was not on ground and had no clue about the seizures. Also, the spokesman of FOU, Zone A in Lagos, Jerry Attah, declined comment, saying that our correspondent should contact the Customs Tincan Island and Apapa commands spokes persons for confirmation.
