Derailed train kills 1, injures 20 in Belgium

Tragedy struck in the east of the capital of Brussels in Belgium when a trail derailed killing one person and injured 20 others with rescue workers said to be doing their best to avoid more casualties at the scene of the incident.

Reports say the passenger train bound for Brussels toppled onto its side when it jumped the tracks shortly after leaving the city of Leuven, 25 km (16 miles) east of the capital at about 1.20 p.m. (1220 GMT).

Rail operator SNCB said two of the 20 injured passengers were seriously wounded with pictures of the incident posted on the internet showing one carriage of the derailed train had come to rest on its side part way down a small slope.

Following the incident, services between Leuven and Brussels were suspended, including some trains heading to the airport.
