Edo State government on Wednesday intercepted over 100 passengers from Kano and Rivers State, screened and took their samples for COVID-19 test.

It was learnt that a truckload of persons numbering 84 believed to have arrived from Kano State were taken to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, ISTH, Edo State.

The development, it was learnt, caused anxiety among health workers at the hospital, who were caught unawares.

Also, another vehicle conveying 26 persons said to be coming from Rivers State was also intercepted and all detainees screened to ascertain their COVID-19 status.

The state Health Commissioner, Dr Patrick Okundia, who addressed reporters in Benin, the state capital, said 26 travellers in a truck were stopped at AGIP Junction on Sapele Road and moved to the Stella Obasanjo Hospital for screening and testing to ascertain their COVID-19 status before they were let off to continue their journey.

“We are going to have their records well documented. We have been directed to get them back into their truck, and direct security men to escort them out of Edo State. It is until they get far away from Edo State that they will be allowed to continue their journey,” the commissioner said.
