EPL: Man City climb to second place

Manchester City closed the gap on leaders Chelsea as they moved up to second in the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Monday night.

Raheem Sterling, who won the Man of the Match, grabbed the opener from close range on the half-hour mark, before Tyrone Mings put the second into his own net under pressure from Aguero in the 69th minute, to give the visitors the comfortable win.

The win, which meant City has extended their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions, also placed them two points above third-placed Tottenham Hotspur and eight points behind leaders Chelsea.

“We made a real performance. I am so pleased with how we did and especially the last 10-15 minutes, we did the right way to make the result with a thousand million passes. It is important to score goals, we are in deficit but it is OK,” City Boss Pep Guardiola said in a post-match interview.

Bournemouth are on 14, and are only six points above the relegation zone.

The Eddie Howe’s men thus have big problems, considering that they are yet to win a game in 2017; and Monday’s defeat extends their winless run in all competitions to seven games.

But speaking after the match, Howe said: “I thought we gave our best. Manchester City were very good. We found it difficult to build momentum and pressure.

“We have to be positive. We go into a break in the Premier League calendar and have to come back refreshed and ready to fight for our league survival.”

Manchester City will travel to play their fifth round of the FA Cup against Huddersfield on Saturday, while Bournemouth will not play again until 25 February when they go to West Brom.
