FIGHTER JET: US may sanction Egypt over deal with Russia

The United States said it is considering the imposition of sanctions on Egypt if it eventually goes ahead with a proposed purchase of Russian warplanes

US officials said on Monday Washington would not hesitate to impose sanctions on Egypt after it signed a $2billion agreement with Russia to buy more than 20 Su-35 fighter jets early this year.

“It puts them at risk of sanctions, and it puts them at risk of loss of future acquisitions. It’s not a new thing,” Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, R Clarke Cooper, told reporters at the Dubai Airshow.

Cairo is clearly aware of this. It’s not new news,” Cooper added.

Reports said Washington could impose sanctions under its Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which targets purchases of military equipment from Russia.
