The inability to restrict the attraction of the aroma of a soup being cooked by a woman for her family has sent a man to an early grave.
The man and two others were said to have attacked the cook and attempted to make away with her soup before a mob chased them and caught up with the deceased, who was inflicted with machete cuts before being set ablaze.
The incident happened in Calabar, Cross Rivers State on Sunday at Mayne Avenue Extension in Calabar South.
The woman was said to be warming the soup for her family’s breakfast before they would go to an early morning mass at a nearby Catholic church when the ‘hungry jacks’, allegedly attracted by the aroma of the soup, suddenly appeared in the compound and snatched the pot of soup.
As they were going out of the compound, the woman was said to have raised an alarm and a hot chase of the criminals ensued. The one with the pot of soup was later caught as he would not let go the pot of soup which slowed down his race while the two others escaped.

He was butchered by the angry mob before being set ablaze around Atu Secondary School.
A witness said the mob caught up with the one carrying the pot of soup because “the boy was not able to run as fast as his accomplices because of the pot of soup he refused to drop”.
It was gathered that petty robbery is very common in the area and many people, especially ladies have been victims on several occasion as they are usually waylaid at night and disposed of their handbags and phones.
There was police presence in the area as at the time of filling this report.

Esau was definitely more lucky, if the only thing he had to part with for a pot of porridge was his birthright…
