Former Egyptian President Morsi, 19 others bag 3-yr jail term for insulting judiciary

Ex-Egyptian leader Mohamed Morsi has been handed a three year jail term alongside 19 others on charges of insulting the judiciary.

According to Egyptian news sources, Morsi was convicted by the Cairo Criminal Court of defaming the judiciary in a speech he made while in office “with the aim of spreading hate”.

Morsi was also ordered by the court to pay one million Egyptian pounds ($56,270) as compensation to a judge Morsi had accused of overseeing fraud in a previous election.

Democratically elected after Egypt’s 2011 revolution, Morsi was deposed following mass protests and a military coup in July 2013 and since his ouster, he has been tried in several different cases.
