Irish PM infuriates conservatives after attending gay pride event in North Ireland

Social conservatives in Ireland are infuriated after Prime Minister Leo Varadkar was spotted attending a gay pride event in Northern Ireland.

According to reports, Varadkar (who has Indian roots) upset some social conservatives back home especially with the fact that Northern Ireland is the only region in the United Kingdom where same-sex marriage is still illegal.

Speaking to newsmen on the way to the event, Vadakar said; “I am not here to unsettle anyone, but I am here to show my support and the support of my government for equality before the law for all citizens no matter where they reside.”

The Prime Minister, who became Ireland’s first openly gay leader when he took office in June, reportedly later joined activists preparing for Northern Ireland’s largest gay pride parade for a “Pride Breakfast” in a Belfast pub.
