Iwobi scores as Arsenal beat Brighton on Wenger's 21st anniversary

Nigerian forward, Alex Iwobi, scored his 6th Arsenal career goal in their 2-0 win over Brighton at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, who joined Arsenal back in 1996, marked the 21st anniversary of his arrival at the club with the victory.

It was Nacho Monreal who put the home side ahead 16 minutes into the game when he shot through a crowded penalty area after Brighton had failed to clear a free-kick.

But Iwobi added a second goal barely 10 minutes into the second half when he finished off a slick passing move on the counter-attack.

Speaking after the game, Iwobi admitted the victory was as a result of team effort and expressed his happiness as his side kept four successive Premier League clean sheets.

“It was a great team play,” he said. “I wouldn’t say it was comfortable but we made it as easy as we could. It is always good to win the game and come away with a clean sheet.”

Arsenal have now won their last 11 games at the Emirates in all competitions, their second longest ever run at the ground.

“We kept the clean sheet and of course got three points. We have played more fluent than today but playing Monday, Thursday and today, it was important to get three points,” Wenger said.

“It was a difficult week because the game at Bate (Europa League matchday 2 clash on Thursday) was a difficult game. I am pleased.”

With the win, Arsenal are a point behind north London rivals Tottenham in the chasing pack behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Arsenal’s next game will be against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday, 14 October.
