Kaduna court adjourns El-Zakzaky’s trial indefinitely

The trial of the leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat, has been adjourned indefinitely by Kaduna State High Court.

The court had earlier slated the trial to continue this Monday, March 25.

But the court said it had no option than adjourn the matter because the trial judge, Justice Gideon Kurada, has been appointed as a member of the Election Petition Tribunal in Yobe State.

El-Zakzaky is being prosecuted by the Federal Government over alleged offences bothering on homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace, among other charges.

El-Zakzaky’s travail started in December 2015, when Nigerian Army raided his residence in Zaria, seriously injuring him, and killing hundreds of his followers.

He has since then been kept in detention despite court order late 2016 for his release.

The presiding judge, Justice Kurada, had also denied him bail during the last sitting on January 22, 2018.

At the last sitting, the defendant’s lawyer, Femi Falana, had prayed the court to give a mandatory order for his client and his wife to be flown abroad.
