At last APC to hold second National Convention in April

Buffeted by a myriad of internal crisis, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclosed its intention to hold a second convention in April.

The party has therefore set out to convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting where it will decide the venue for the event.

The party’s new National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi stated this in a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja, adding that “the National Convention of the APC will hold not later than April 2017.”

According to him the decision to hold the convention not later than April was arrived at during a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party held earlier in the week.

He said that the APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who chaired the NWC meeting, had during the occasion outlined the processes leading to the National Convention which will commence with the Congress to fill vacancies in the state party structures across the country.

APC had its first National Convention in June 2014, where Oyegun emerged by consensus votes as the party’s national chairman, despite initial opposition from his kinsman, Tom Ikimi who was not seen at the venue of the convention.

Lately, the ruling party has had to contend with squables between and among its henchmen. Notable among these were the face-off between the party chairman, John Oyegun and party leader, Ahmed Bola Tinubu; and that between Governor Nasir el-Rufai and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

Close watchers of the polity believe the convention will attempt to address the quiet but fierce internal struggle for control of the party machinery ahead the 2019 elections. Already, the power struggle has consumed Timi Frank, the party’s former Deputy National Publicity Secretary.
