Residents of the Alafara area of Ibadan in Oyo State can now sleep soundly after the leader of a deadly robbery gang identified as Maroof was killed by local vigilante during an operation.

Maroof was shot severally by the local vigilante but his body was dragged away from the scene of the shooting by two other gang members who took him to a hideout where they sought help from a native doctor according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu.

“The robbery gang met their waterloo when they invaded Alafara area of Ibadan in the early hours of November 7, 2016. The robbery suspects, who had been terrorising many parts of the state, engaged in a gun battle with a vigilante group, resulting in the fatal shooting of the gang leader.

“Although the hoodlums escaped from the scene, two members of the criminal gang were later arrested at their criminal hideout by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command while they were arranging for a local doctor to treat the injured member, who later died as a result of injuries.

“Ojeniyi Ibrahim, 32, and Taiwo Odetola, 27, were arrested,” said Ajisebutu.

One of the suspects, Odetola informed that Maroof’s robbery plan did not go as planned and they were later engaged in a gun battle with local vigilante.

“He took us to the area for the robbery operation but on our way, we encountered a vigilante group who shot at us. Moroof was badly injured and we took him to a place where we were spotted by the residents of the area and arrested,” he said.
