After losing to North America in the bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco has declared intentions of bidding again to host the global showpiece in 2030.

The North African nation had bidded five times to host the biggest sporting event in the world, and five times they have been overlooked.

Their hopes of hosting the 2026 edition were dashed last Wednesday, when FIFA members voted in favour of a joint bid by United States, Canada and Mexico at the 68th Fifa Congress in Moscow.

But they are not giving up on being able to host the tournament, as spokesperson of Moroccan government, Mustapha El Khalfi, says the country will begin preparations to bid for 2030.

“Upon royal instructions, Morocco will prepare its bid to host the 2030 tournament,” he told reporters.

This is coming after president of the Morocco Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, lauded FIFA for the open voting system on Wednesday, adding that his country still hopes to realise their dream of hosting the tournament some day.

“I wish to congratulate FIFA for the conduct of this process.

“I would like to reaffirm the determination of my country to continue to work for football and realise one day our dream to host the World Cup in Morocco,” he said.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that England could also be bidding for the 2030 tournament – a bid that could involve member nations of the United Kingdom.

Also, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay have announced their intention to bid jointly to host the tournament.

If Morocco wins the bid to host the games, it will be the second time the African continent is hosting the FIFA Men’s World Cup. The first was in South Africa back in 2010.
