Nadal reaches US Open final, eyes 16th Grand Slam title

Top seed Rafael Nadal defeated Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in four sets to set up a US Open final against Kevin Anderson.

The Spaniard won 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2 to extend a remarkable run of consecutive wins he’s amassed in semi-finals of Grand Slams.

The world No. 1 has not lost a match in the final four of a major for an incredible eight years and has put together a 15-match winning streak in that time.

And Sunday’s final will provide Nadal the opportunity to clinch a third US Open and 16th Grand Slam title, with Anderson standing on his way.

“It means a lot,” said Nadal. “It has been an amazing season of course after a couple with injures and troubles.

“To be back here in front of this amazing crowd, on this amazing court, and to have the chance to fight for another title is so important to me.”

South African 31-year-old Anderson beat Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 in the other semis, and faces a huge challenge against Nadal, who has a 4-0 record in their head-to-head.
