‘National Theatre not up for sale’

The Governing Board of the National Theatre (situated in the Iganmu area of Lagos State) has refuted rumours making the rounds that the monument completed in 1976 in preparation for the Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977, is up for sale.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Agbo A. Ita, the Board said the sale of the National Theatre which was designed by a Bulgarian Construction Company, Technoexportsroy, has neither been conceived nor discussed at any given time or meeting.

The statement by the Board also added that the general public should disregard any insinuations, allegations or rumours on the sale of the National Theatre as they are not true.

“The attention of the Board has been drawn to a recent allegation in the public domain that the National Theatre has been put up for sale.

“In view of this, it has become necessary for the Board to make clarifications that the sale of the National Theatre has neither been conceived nor discussed at any given time or meeting.

“The National Theatre remains our National Symbol and a Pride of our Great Country.

“The Board remains steadfast in its commitment to the development and improvement of the National Theatre.

“The public should therefore disregard in its totality, any insinuations, or allegations or rumours on the sale of the National Theatre,” the statement by the Board read in full.
