Nigerian Senate investigate IDPs fund diversion

Published

on

The Senate on Tuesday put up a-10-man ad-hoc committee to probe the diversion of the N5 billion funds meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-East, by the Federal Government.

Senator Shehu Sani headed committee is with the mandated to find out how the funds were utilized from the time of release to date.

The Senate, which frowned at the poor handling of the humanitarian crisis in IDPs in North-East by the government, cautioned that unless urgent action was taken to rescue the worsening situation, the country should be ready to lose thousands of the IDPs to death.

The Senate arrived at the resolution when it considered and adopted a motion entitled: “Mounting humanitarian crisis in the North East,” sponsored by Senator Baba Kaka Garbai and 17 others.

According to the lawmakers, obvious signs abounds that the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government is fallen short of its duty to make needed relief materials available for the IDPs in order to cushion the effects of lack of foods and other basic amenities in camps in the three embattled North-East states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.
