Perform like last time, northern elders tell Osinbajo

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has assured acting President Yemi Osinbajo of their full support and called on him to exercise responsibility as he did in the past with commitment, sensitivity and respect for the constitution.

The group also praised President Muhammadu Buhari for transferring power to Osinbajo in respect of the constitution, before embarking on an indefinite follow-up medical treatment in the United Kingdom.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Sunday travelled to the UK for medical treatment making sure he transmitted power to his vice president via letters to the National Assembly.

This is the second time Osinbajo is acting as president in the absence of President Buhari. The first was Buhari’s earlier 49 days medical leave in the UK.

Speaking on the development, the deputy leader of NEF, Paul Unongo, at a news conference shortly after a meeting in Kano on Thursday said: “The Forum expresses its full support and encouragement behind Acting President Osinbajo and urges him to exercise responsibility, as he did in the past, with commitment, sensitivity and respect for the Constitution.

“We urge him to ignore mischief makers which seek to pitch him against the President or the Nigerian people whose mandates they both exercise.”

He further urged for full cooperation for the acting president from all those in position of powers in order to sustain a united, focused and committed administration.

NEF also used the occasion to commend efforts of President Buhari in securing the northern part of the country from the clutches of Boko Haram.

Unongo said, “Buhari has confronted the issue that has been disturbing us by tackling the insurgency which had caused a lot of havoc in the region especially the three states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.”

Also commended for their contributions by NEF were Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

Unongo then cautioned, “We expect that the war against corruption will not suffer a setback, and current investigations and activities will not be stalled due to the absence of President Buhari.”
