Polices asks Brazilian S’Court to probe President Temer over graft charges

Trouble is potentially brewing for outgoing Brazilian President Michel Temer after Brazil’s federal police asked the Supreme Court to indict the 78-year-old leader.

Brazil’s federal police wants Temer prosecuted following findings of an investigation which revealed that he took bribes to issue a decree in May 2017 to benefit companies in the port sector.

According to reports, the investigation on Temer who is wrapping up his term as one of the most unpopular Brazilian presidents in decades, spanned over a period of one-year.

However, Supreme Court Justice Lugs Roberto Barroso, who is overseeing the case, said on Tuesday he would wait to see the findings of Brazil’s public Prosecutor’s Office before deciding on how to proceed with the case.

Temer had escaped trials in the past after lawmakers, on two occasions rejected corruption charges levelled at against him.

The embattled leader who has been in power since May 2016 took office after President Dilma Rousseff was impeached.
