A time-line on negotiations for North Korea’s denuclearisation will not be set, so says U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The U.S. Secretary of State made the comments while speaking to CNN in a telephone interview conducted on Sunday and reported by the network on Monday.

Pompeo said he wanted to see continued progress towards North Korean denuclearisation while also noting that the US will continue to monitor Pyongyang’s seriousness about its move to denuclearise.

“I am not going to put a timeline on it, whether that’s two months, six months, we are committed to moving forward in an expeditious moment to see if we can achieve what both leaders set out to do,” Pompeo told CNN, referring to a June 12 summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Pompeo’s comments are coming hours after US President Donald Trump extended punitive sanctions against North Korea by one year saying the country still posed an “extraordinary threat”.

The extension of sanctions against North Korea is coming despite the fact that Trump had previously said that Pyongyang no longer posed a ‘nuclear threat’.

Recall that during the last meeting Trump had with Kim Jong Un of North Korea, he said that sanctions would not be lifted on Pyongyang until further progress was made on its denuclearisation.
