Quadri draws Japan’s Mizutani in ITTF W’Cup knockout

Nigeria’s Table Tennis superstar, Aruna Quadri will face fourth seed Jun Mizutani on Saturday in the round of 16 at the 2017 ITTF Men’s World Cup in Liege, Belgium.

Quadri’s Japanese opponent won bronze in the singles event and silver in the team event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and also won the 2010 and 2014 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals.

Quadri made it to the knockout stages after finishing second with a 4-2 win over American Kanak Jha and 4-3 loss to Korea’s Lee Sangsu on Friday.

Africa’s other representative at the global competition, Omar Assar, also made it through the group stages after picking up a 4-3 win over Belgium’s Cedric Nuytinck before succumbing 4-3 to Russia’s Alexander Shibaev.

The Egyptian, Assar was drawn against against world champion and number one seed Ma Long of China.

Winners in the round of 16 will progress into the quarterfinals which will also take place Saturday, and competition ends on Sunday.
