RIVERS RERUN: IGP sets up panel to investigate Gov Wike’s alleged audio comments

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris has set up investigation panel to study the audio comments allegedly made by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike during the December 10 legislative re-run elections in the state.

A voice threatening Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials to rig the rerun election in Rivers State in his favour was reported by an online media, not Ripples Nigeria, as belonging to the Rivers State Governor Wike.

Wike had however denied the voice in entirety, accusing the publishers of being sponsored by some political opponents in the state to accuse him falsely.

But in a statement issued by the Force spokesman, DCP Don Awunah, he said the force was going to investigate the voice as well as other 70 incidents mentioned by the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, during the elections.

The Police therefore called on Rivers government and INEC to make available to the panel facts that will enable it achieve a comprehensive and conclusive investigation.

“The election observers, civil society groups, Human Rights watchers and other stakeholders are equally called upon to assist the team with valuable information they may have,” Awunah said.

The state Deputy Commissioner of Police-headed panel has just 30 days to submit its report, which Police promise to make public.
