Is Rivers The Most Deadly State In Nigeria?

After suspending election initially in 6 local government areas of Rivers State during the rerun of National and State legislative assemblies on Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Sunday,  announced the suspension of election in two more LGAs in the state.

This has brought the number to eight out of 23 local government areas in the state.

The development was announced by the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Rivers State in a press statement, adding that elections were suspended in the two local government areas because of violence and irregularities.

The statement reads in part, “Further to our earlier pronouncement on the suspension of the rerun elections in the six Local Government Areas of, Khana, Bonny, Gokana, Andoni, Tai and Eleme following disturbances and violence that impeded the electoral process in those parts of the state, it has also become necessary to suspend the elections in Etche and Asari-Toru Local Government Area, for the same reason.”

The REC said the suspension was to forestall breakdown of law and order or loss of lives and property.

He also  added that the commission was currently studying the situation in the remaining 15 local government areas where collations were on going.
