Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney wrote his name in history yesterday by becoming England’s all-time leading goal scorer.
The striker smashed home a penalty to pass United legend Sir Bobby Charlton’s mark and claim the record with 50 goals.
Rooney said: “It’s a great feeling. I’ve been close for the last few games and it’s a dream come true.
“I’ve got a lot of football in me for England. I hope the goals don’t stop.”
Rooney’s historic 84th-minute penalty was his 50th strike for the Three Lions and overhauled Sir Bobby Charlton as the country’s leading all-time goalscorer.
It also helped England maintain their 100 per cent record in Group E after sub Harry Kane had set England on the way against Switzerland.
Skipper Rooney, who looked moved by the enormity of the milestone moment at Wembley, said: “It’s a good feeling, obviously known I’ve been close it to it the last few games. To finally do it was a dream come true.
“I got a bit emotional out there. I’m happy it’s done. It’s a huge honour and one I’m extremely proud of.
“I was more nervous than normal. It was a big moment for me. I just picked my spot and put my boot through it. The keeper got a touch but thankfully it had too much power.
“To be England’s record scorer before the age of 30, it’s something I could never have dreamt of. I’m immensely proud.
“I’ve scored a lot of goals under Roy and I’m grateful for the freedom he’s given me.”
Rooney was immediately congratulated by Charlton, whose goals helped England win the 1966 World Cup at Wembley.

Charlton, whose record had stood for 45 years, said: “I would like to congratulate Wayne on becoming England’s leading goal scorer. I have always been very proud to hold this record.
“I cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don’t hold this record, however, I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country, who now holds this record.
“On behalf of myself and everyone at Manchester United I would like to say congratulations Wayne, this is a very proud moment for you and your family.
“It is a record that I am sure you will hold for a long time, and it is clear to see that you will go on scoring for your club and country for a long time to come.”

Congrats Rooney. Seesth thou a man diligent in his work, he will stand before kings and princes, and not before mean men. Thumbs up, Rooney.
