Salah fires Liverpool past Napoli to UCL knockouts; Spurs through with draw at Barca

Reigning African Footballer of the Year, Mohamed Salah scored the much-needed goal for Liverpool against Napoli to help them advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Reds needed to win the game, which is their final group match, to stand any chance of going through.

They went ahead when Salah skipped into the area and fired between David Ospina’s legs in the 34th minute.

Several chances were missed by both sides especially the hosts, who held on to their lead to eliminate the Serie A giants from the Champions League.

In Group C’s other game, Paris St-Germain won 4-1 at Red Star Belgrade to top the table.

Elsewhere, Tottenham fought back to draw 1-1 at Barcelona, and successfully sealed their place in the knockout round.

Spurs advanced despite the result at Camp Nou since Inter Milan also played 1-1 against PSV at the San Siro.

Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring for Barcelona with a fine lone goal in the 7th minute, before Lucas Moura fired in a 85th-minute equaliser to send Spurs into the last 16.

In Turkey, Super Eagles forward, Henry Onyekuru was in action for Galatasaray who sealed Europa League spot despite being beaten 3-2 at home by Porto in a Group D encounter.

Bryan Idowu’s Lokomotiv Moscow had hopes of finishing third in the group, but they were stunned by a last-minute winner by Schalke 04 in Germany.

In Group A, Monaco were beaten 0-2 at home by Borussia Dortmund while Club Brugge held visiting Atletico Madrid to a goalless draw.

Dortmund topped the group, and advanced to the last 16 alongside Atletico, while Club Brugge will drop to the Europa League. Monaco crashed out.
