Temporary relief for May as EU leaders rubber stamp UK's Brexit deal

Temporary relief has come the way of Prime Minister Theresa May after European Union leaders approved UK’s Brexit deal at a Brussels summit on Sunday.

Reports say the deal was approved by 27 leaders who took barely half an hour to rubber stamp the 600-page treaty urging Britons to back May’s package.

Moments after the deal was agreed, President of the European Council Donald Tusk took to Twitter to announce the development.

“This is the deal,” European Union chief executive Jean-Claude Juncker told reporters on his way in to the meeting, saying he believed May would get it through parliament and ruling out big new concessions.

EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said now that the first phase was done, the United Kingdom and the EU needed to work for “an ambitious and unprecedented partnership”.

“Now is the time for everybody to take their responsibility – everybody,” he said.

May now has the arduous task of convincing her divided minority government to accept the deal which is expected to face fierce resistance in parliament in the coming weeks from both supporters and opponents of Brexit.
