Trump fires Tillerson, after cutting short his visit to Nigeria

A day after cutting short his visit to Nigeria on the grounds of ill health, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been given the marching orders by President Donald Trump.

The development was confirmed by Trump who conveyed it in an early morning tweet. He also revealed that he is replacing the nation’s embattled top diplomat with CIA director Mike Pompeo.

“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!”

Mr Trump said Gina Haspel would replace Mr Pompeo as director of the CIA, and would be the first woman to hold the position.

The major White House shakeup comes amid delicate negotiations ahead of a face-to-face meeting between the US President and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.

The Washington Post reports that his sack may have been the reason Tillerson cut short his trip to Africa,
