The development was confirmed by Trump who conveyed it in an early morning tweet. He also revealed that he is replacing the nation’s embattled top diplomat with CIA director Mike Pompeo.
“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!”
Mr Trump said Gina Haspel would replace Mr Pompeo as director of the CIA, and would be the first woman to hold the position.
