U-23 AFCON: Olympic Eagles to battle S’Africa, Cote d’ivoire, Zambia

The Olympic Eagles of Nigeria have discovered their group foes for the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the draw conducted today (Wednesday) in Alexandria, Egypt.

The tournament, which will be hosted by Egypt, is scheduled to hold between November 8 and 22, 2019.

The Championship doubles as the qualifiers for next year’s Olympic Games billed to hold in Tokyo, Japan.

The best three teams, that is the finalists and the third place winner, will represent Africa in Tokyo.

The previous two editions of the competition were won by Gabon (2011) in Morocco and Nigeria (2015) in Senegal.

In the history of Olympic football tournaments, Nigeria have won gold (in 1996) and silver (in 2008), while Cameroon won gold in 2000, and Ghana bronze in 1992.

Group A: Egypt (hosts), Mali, Cameroon, Ghana

Group B: Nigeria, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Zambia
