UCL: PSG thrash Celtic, United lose; Barca reach last 16 despite Juve draw

Scottish champions, Celtic were swept aside 7-1 by a rampant Paris St-Germain in a Champions League matchday 5 encounter at the Parc de Princes on Wednesday.

A first minute goal through Moussa Dembele put the visitors ahead, but the lead didn’t last for long as Neymar equalised in the 9th minute and scored another on 22 minutes.

The Brazilian then created the third for Edinson Cavani, before Kylian Mbappe struck to make it 4-1 before half-time.

Marco Verratti, Cavani and Dani Alves scored in a five-minute blitz in the second half to compound Celtic’s misery.

The victory was PSG’s biggest win in the Champions League, and a chastening night for the visitors, who lost 5-0 to PSG at home earlier in the group.

The Scottish champions still have the advantage in the race to finish third in Champions League Group B, with bottom-placed Anderlecht losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich also on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Manchester United missed the chance to book their place in the last 16 as Basel scored an 89th-minute winner in Switzerland.

The goal came when Michael Lang turned in Raoul Petretta’s cross at the back post to spark jubilation around St Jakob Park.

But a point against Spartak Moscow in the Red Devils’ final group A game next month would guarantee them a place in the knockout stage.

Spartak were beaten 2-0 by CSKA Moscow in the group’s other game.

Also on Wednesday night, Serie A champions, Juventus played a goalless draw with Barcelona, but the point was enough to send the Spanish giants to the knockout stages.

In Group B’s other game, Sporting thrashed Olympiakos 3-1 in Lisbon to stay only a point behind Juventus as the race to last 16 remains wide open with one game remaining.

Earlier on, Premier League champions, Chelsea sealed their qualification for the knockout stages with a thumping 4-0 victory over Qarabag.

The other game of Group C between Atletico Madrid and AS Roma ended 2-0 in favour of the La Liga side, and the result keeps alive their hopes of making it to the next round.
