United beat Liverpool to strenghten grip on second spot

Manchester United beat Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday as a brace from Marcus Rashford spurred the win and strengthened their grip on second place in the Premier League.

The victory meant Jose Mourinho’s side are 13 points behind leaders Manchester City, who play at Stoke on Monday.

Rashford, making his first league start since last December, fired home Romelu Lukaku’s header putting the home side ahead 14 minutes into the game.

A clean pass from Lukaku to Juan Mata and to Rashford resulted to the second goal via a slight deflection from Alexander-Arnold 10 minutes after the opener.

Jurgen Klopp’s side dropped in pace and quality afterward, but improved dramatically after the break and a 66th-minute own goal by Eric Bailly reduced the two-goal deficit for the visitors.

United then held on to the lead, and clinch the victory that puts them five points clear of the third-placed Merseysiders.

United will host Sevilla next on Tuesday, with the hope of reaching the last eight of the UEFA Champions League; and will host Brighton next weekend in FA Cup last-8 clash.
