US security chief proffers solution to end Washington, Ankara stand off

The US National Security Adviser John Bolton has proferred a solution to end the current stand off between Washington and Ankara over jailed American pastor Andrew Brunson.

According to Bolton, Turkey could end its lira-battering crisis with the United States “instantly” by freeing the detained American pastor.

“Look, the Turkish government made a big mistake in not releasing Pastor Brunson,” Bolton told Reuters in an interview during a visit to Israel.

“Every day that goes by that mistake continues, this crisis could be over instantly if they did the right thing as a NATO ally, part of the West, and release pastor Brunson without condition.”

Last week, a Turkish high court based in Izmir rejected an appeal made by the US to release Brunson.

The court ruled that Brunson who has been at the centre of a dispute between Ankara and Washington after he was held on espionage and terror-related charges, will stay under house arrest.

The move by the court upheld a decision taken by a lower court earlier last week, even as Brunson’s lawyer says he would appeal the ruling.
